Lions and Tigers and Gorillas, Oh my!

One of the attractions to the Navarre -  Pensacola area is the Gulf Breeze Zoo located off of Hwy 98.  And as of late there has been much ado and not over nothing.

Yet another reason to make your visit to our Gulf Coast is to see the latest addition to the Gulf Breeze Zoo. Jan. 23 a little male gorilla was born. His name – although many suggestions have been voiced – has yet to be decided upon. 

As this is the first time his mother has had a baby, the zoo keepers are assisting in nursing the little gorilla and nurturing him. 

Feb. 4 was the little ape’s first appearance to the public.

Mardi Gras on Navarre Beach

Mardi Gras was celebrated in Europe through the Middle Ages, and this Carnival time in February meant fun and merriment proceeding the time of Lent, repentance and fasting.  Mardi Gras was brought to America by French explorers who came to the Gulf Coast.

As much French influence remained in the New Orleans and Louisiana region, having once been French controlled before President Jefferson's Louisiana Purchase, the tradition and festival of Mardi Gras continued on. Although there have been times in our history when the frivolity was postponed - such as Word War I, the Great Depression and World War II, Mardi Gras still persists.

Since then, the celebration has spread throughout the Gulf Coast regions and incorporates the colors of Gold, Purple and Green, the annual parades with moonpies and mardi gras beads, and the phrase "Let the Good Times Roll!"

Tee Time at Hidden Creek Golf and Country Club

It is the season for snowbirds at Navarre Vacation Rentals and golfing is one way to spend January and February months in the Florida sunshine.

One of two golf courses within 15 to 20 minutes from Navarre Beach is Hidden Creek golf and country club.

This course was developed around 1988 by a well known golf course architect, Ron Garl. Hidden Creek was also rated as one of the best golf courses in Northwest Florida by Golf Digest.

Hidden Creek is open to the public and offers a practice facility, private lessons, well stocked golf shop, and for after the game, dining at the Tuscan Grille with views overlooking the course.

Calling All Runners!

Are you ready? Pensacola's Annual Double Bridge run/walk race is a month away. Registration has begun online and ends Jan. 29.

The race is in fact two races for the morning of Feb. 4, 2012. The first race is a 15k run permitting up to 2500 runners that will begin at 7 a.m. The second race is the 5k walk/ run race which is permitting up to 1200 runners and 300 walkers and will begin at 8:30 a.m..

Parking for both will be at Pensacola Beach in the Casino Beach lot (Big Beach Ball Water Tower). Shuttles will bring runners from the parking lot to the race starting lines. For the 15k shuttles will run from 5  to 6 a.m., and for the 5k, shuttles will run from 6 to 7 a.m.
