Ring in the New Year with Navarre's Penguin Plunge and Paddle

On Navarre Beach, Christmas was quiet and a little damp, but very pleasant. This weekend is New Years and here at Kilgore Realty - Navarre Vacation Rentals we want to wish you a safe and Happy New Years.

Navarre will be quiet without any festivities of its own for New Years Eve, but Pensacola will have its Pelican drop in downtown.

While Staying at Navarre Beach for New Years start 2012 off with a splash by being a part of the Penguin Plunge and Paddle taking place on Navarre Beach. Much like the Polar Bear dip that is so widely known, the Penguin plunge allows participants to contribute to a cause - The Fisher House on the Emerald Coast.

The Plunge is planned to take place at 1:30 p.m. behind Juana's Pagoda. However, there is also, for those less daring to take a dip into the cool waters, the Paddle Board contest. Participants must paddle a mile course. This contest will take place first at noon.

To participate as a plunger or as "chicken" register online at www.nwfevents.com or print out the entry form and turn in when you come. (By registering "Chicken" you will still be able to participate in the good food and warm beverages without having to risk life and limb in the cold January waters.) The cost is $25.

For those desiring to participate in the Paddle Board Competition - register as a SUP competitor. The cost for this is $30.

All registrants will receive free warm beverages and food. Set 2012 off with a bit of daring and come out to take part in the cold water and warm food. Happy New Years!

Christmas on the Gulf Coast

It is the Christmas season again along the Gulf Coast and the lights are beginning to sparkle. Navarre had their lighting ceremony this past Saturday at the Navarre Park and their Christmas parade. The lights will be lit every night through December for your enjoyment.

There are other lighting ceremonies and Christmas parades in the area, so when staying in one of our Navarre Vacation Rentals on Navarre Beach make sure to plan for one.

Pensacola's Christmas parade will be this Saturday, Dec. 10 at 5:15 p.m. in downtown Pensacola.

The town of Milton will have their Holiday lighted Boat Parade the same day, Dec. 10,  but at 7 p.m., so make sure to find a good seat on Milton's Riverwalk.

Then Dec. 22 head to Seville Square for Carols in Old Seville. Numerous choirs from the community will be there to perform your favorite Christmas carols. The performance begins at 6 p.m. and runs to 8 p.m.

So plan for one of these Christmas outings,  and come experience what the Christmas spirit is like in Navarre Beach, Florida.

Navarre Beach needs your input...

Yesterday Navarre had a meeting to invite ideas as to how to best utilize the Beach park at the Eastern end of the island. The Tourism Development Council is interested in different ideas for food or entertainment.

Currently based in the park is our own Marine Science Station which provides Spring and Summer camps for locals and their children but also visiting guests. The station provides hands on learning so that children of all ages can learn more about the creatures living in our Gulf waters.

But this station just takes up a little part of the Beach park. Here at Navarre Vacation Rentals, we are wanting to know what are your suggestions? Would you like to see more restaurants? Would you want to see an entertainment center - mini golf, conference center, etc.

So you as our visitors, what would you like to see on Navarre Beach? We look forward to your thoughts.

Navarre Beach after the Turkey

Perhaps where you were on Thanksgiving, it was cold with a seasonable chill. The ideal weather for bundling up and sipping something warm while watching the Macy’s parade or football while awaiting the traditional feast.

However, Thanksgiving on the Gulf Coast of Navarre Beach was beautiful with the temperatures ranging from 60 to 70 degrees. The sky was clear and the sun shining. Holiday vacationers were out and about walking the shore, biking on the paved bike path and letting their kids make sandcastles in the sand.

This is an average November day in Navarre Beach and December is not much different. No snow to be seen here, we just have sugar white quartz crystal sand.

Starting this next week our rates will drop to the lowest of the year. Start planning for your weekend excursion or prepare for your holiday escape with family at the beach. Navarre Vacation Rentals still has availability for Christmas and New Years. Just consider the possibilities, and call us today.

The Proclamation of Thanksgiving...

This week we shall gather around our tables for a feast, but how far does Thanksgiving go back in the United States?

Well, all the way back to the 1600s. It originally began with the Pilgrims who arrived at Plymouth Rock. Being ill equipped for the winter before them, they suffered through the harsh cold and sicknesses that took hold killing close to half of their colony. With their faith in God and help from the Natives they had a plentiful harvest the following year and set aside three days to give thanks to God for their provisions.

Fast forward a hundred years, the United States had just become a nation. The government had been established by our founding fathers, and they all felt compelled to make an official day of Thanksgiving. Both houses agreed to the resolution and passed it along to the President for his approval - the President was George Washington.

His words were in his Thanksgiving Proclamation of 1789:
By the President of the United States of America, a Proclamation.

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor - and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.
Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be -- That we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks...

Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.
George Washington

With the struggles and victory of the Revolutionary War behind them, the establishing of a new nation before them, our pioneering founders established a day of Thanksgiving to celebrate and appreciate the faithfulness of a Creator involved in the affairs of men.

With this tidbit of American History, Navarre Vacation Rentals at Kilgore Realty is wishing you and yours a Happy Thanksgiving!
